UTRIP Internship Program Description

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) offers a fully funded, 6-week summer research internship for undergraduate students in natural sciences (or related fields). It provides a unique chance to work on cutting-edge research projects in physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth & planetary sciences, or biological sciences, under expert mentorship.

Key Responsibilities in Research Internship for Undergraduates

  • Undertake full-time research project on a chosen project in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biological sciences, or related fields under supervision of host-lab faculty.
  • Read and discuss scientific papers with faculty mentors.
  • Participate in all scheduled academic and social events, including lectures, lab meetings, cultural and social activities.
  • Submit a five-page research report within two weeks after the program ends and deliver a 10-minute final presentation.

Required Skills & Qualifications

To apply for UTRIP Japan internship you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Undergraduate (Bachelor’s) student in a natural science or related field (physics, chemistry, earth & planetary science, biology, etc.).
  • Completed at least one full year in a bachelor’s degree program (or equivalent) at the time of application.

  • English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS if English is not your first language; exemptions apply for 8+ years of English-medium study)
  • Commitment to attend for the entire six-week period and participate in all events.

Eligibility Criteria for UTokyo Internship

This UTRIP summer undergraduate research Internship is open to all international students, including those from India.

  • Eligible Indian degrees: B.Sc / B.Sc (Hons), B.Tech / B.E, BS, BS-MS Integrated, Integrated M.Sc in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Life Sciences, Earth & Planetary Science, Astronomy, Environmental Science, Geology, Materials Science, and related natural-science fields.
  • Students from the 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028 passing batches can apply.
  • Must be enrolled in a bachelor’s program at a university outside Japan and must return to it after the internship (i.e., should not graduate before the program ends).
  • Students in integrated bachelor–master programs may apply, but not those already in the master’s or doctoral years.
  • Health insurance coverage for Japan during internship.

The UTRIP internship for freshers is fully funded.

  • GSS-UTRIP Scholarship: It is a paid internship and participants receive a one-time allowance to cover airfare and local expenses:
    • Asia/Eastern Russia/Oceania/Pacific: ¥140,000 (applicable for Indian students also)
    • Europe/Western Russia/North America: ¥160,000
    • Latin America/Caribbean/Africa/Middle East: ¥170,000
  • FUTI Award: US students may apply separately for this additional award ($2,000 max).

Selection Process for UTRIP Summer Research Internship

  1. Applicants choose up to two “hosting labs” / research projects (in order of preference).
  2. Submit online application including personal statement (700-1000 words), CV, transcripts, GPA, educational background, etc.
  3. Provide one recommendation letter (via online recommendation form by deadline) from a professor familiar with your academic background.
  4. Host lab selection by UTokyo faculty based on research interests.
  5. After document screening and selection, participants will be notified by email and website in March-April 2026.
